John Michael Finnerty was Coolgardie’s first mining warden and resident magistrate.
In these positions he wielded enormous power and was the man responsible for the naming of Coolgardie.
It was to Warden Finnerty, then living at Southern Cross, that Bayley first announced his find. Finnerty’s Residence was built in 1895 at a cost of £2800.
It is now owned by the National Trust of Western Australia and has been restored and furnished.
