The People

Pump People

They were hours away from medical help, provisions had to be thrown off a passing train and home schooling was often the only option, but many of those who lived at the remote pumping stations or in camps along the line recall those times as the ‘best times of their lives’.

It wasn’t just firemen (stokers), engineers and woodcutters who lived in isolated settlements but also wives and children. They can all be said to have done their bit to keep the water flowing.
