“Future generations, I am quite certain will think of us and bless us for our far seeing patriotism, and it will be said of us, as Isaiah said of old, ‘They made a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert”

Held annually on the third Sunday in September, Coolgardie Day is the celebration of Arthur Bayley registering a claim for himself and William Ford, on the 17th of September 1892 at Southern Cross.
The claim was at what was to become known as Coolgardie and Bayley and Ford’s discovery was to spark the greatest gold rush in Australian history.
Coolgardie, the ‘Mother of the Eastern Goldfields’, became known as ‘The Old Camp’ when gold was discovered further east at what was to become Kalgoorlie and the centre of mining operations shifted there. Coolgardie Day is the oldest event in the Eastern Goldfields and attracts thousands of people with connections to this historic town with its magnificent Gold Boom buildings.
