Located at the southern end of Southern Cross the cemetery, which was only used from 1891 until 1898, has been redeveloped as a Pioneer Memorial.
During its seven years of operation 256 people were buried there, 94 in 1895 alone. It is a reminder of the dangers involved in searching for gold in such a hostile environment.
The wife of Western Australia’s most famous bushranger, Moondyne Joe, is buried there. Moondyne Joe, whose real name was Joseph Bolitho Johns, joined the Yilgarn Gold Rush. He knew the area well, having been captured once at Boodalin Soak, which is near Westonia.
