Bodallin Railway Dam

  • Other Details

Bodallin is a small town on the highway. It would be easy to simply drive past but the railway dam to the west of the town, the remains of an old baker’s oven and one of the few large fauna and flora reserves on inland agricultural land make it worth a stop.

The oven is a tangible reminder of an entry made by New Zealand prospector John Aspinall in his 1895 diary:

All these stopping places are composed of a pub, bakery and store and often run by the same individual and the sign that meets the eye everywhere is “Bread & Water” sold here.

Gary Peters. Water from railway dams piped into tanks, like this, to feed engines.
